The Interlochen Oboe Intensives
Dane Philipsen's Oboe Intensives at Interlochen Arts Camps...
Since 2018, Dane Philipsen has been the Program Coordinator for the Oboe Intensive and Advanced Oboe Intensive camps held at the Interlochen Center for the Arts. Running concurrently, the Intensives are tailored to high school oboists ranging from rising ninth graders through recent graduates. As weeklong programs held in mid-June, the Intensives are an excellent prelude to the full Interlochen Arts Camp or an opportunity to have a focused visit to northern Michigan to begin a summer of music making. The Intensives connect you to Interlochen's resident and visiting oboe artist-teachers as well as a robust network of friendly and supportive peers--something that can be difficult for oboists to find at home!
The Advanced Oboe Intensive...
The Advanced Oboe Intensive is an auditioned experience, and students who are invited for AOI demonstrate that they are prepared to perform in master classes for our resident and guest artist-teachers with a collaborative pianist. After students are selected for AOI, participants are surveyed about their current and recent past repertoire, and a comprehensive program is built for the week of classes. During the camp, students typically perform 2-3 movements of various sonata or concerto repertoire as well as an orchestral excerpt. Space in AOI is limited, and students are encouraged to apply early for best consideration.
The Oboe Intensive...
The Oboe Intensive welcomes all high school oboists who are interested in expanding their knowledge of oboe technique and our instrument's solo, etude, and chamber music repertoire. OI participants are invited to perform etude repertoire for our resident and guest artist-teachers in master classes. After students are enrolled in OI, participants are surveyed about their current and recent repertoire, and a comprehensive program is built for the week of classes. Space in OI is limited, and students are encouraged to apply early.
Both Intensives...
Both intensives share classes that build fundamental technique, develop better habits for your own practice throughout the year, and demonstrate the reed making process. You will gather daily to rehearse in oboe chamber ensembles and be coached by our artist-teachers. We also explore the college audition process and career development with insights from the faculty. Throughout the week, participants have opportunities to enjoy the natural beauty of Interlochen's campus as well as recreation activities led by Camp Life representatives. You will get to hear the artist-teachers perform a recital, and the Intensives culminate with a performance of the oboe ensembles that is open to friends and family on the Interlochen Campus.
